HDB Corridor - Thief deterrence
Academic work
Part one of this project aims to identify the problem in common shared spaces in HDB corridor. How the exploration of views and perspectives can create deterrence or a defensible space to prevent thief in a semi- public space.
The aim for part one of this project is to explore the relationship between the resident and passer-by in a HDB common corridor. HDB public corridor are commonly occupied by personal item from the resident living in close proximity to the corridor.
These item includes gardening pot, shoe rack or shelf and laundry rack. There has been report that these item are removed from the public corridor without the owner’s permission and is an act of thief.
Thus, can the design of the HDB corridor create deterrence or a defensible space which can reduce or stop the act of thief in these shared common space
Blurring the public space
The general idea of territorial claim by Herman Hertzberger is an non-straightforward path to the interior space allowing the semi-public space to feel more personal. So the way the low wall are arrange can affect the public enclosed space.
Porosity between spaces
Addition of privacy screening creates semi-public buffer space that acts like a guard house where passer-by are unsure if they are been watched behind those vent block.
Defensible spaces
It is a spatial design which allows the resident to control the area around their home like the corridor or lift lobby. It relies on self-help instead of the intervention of the authority to reduce crime within the neighborhood.
